Brief
Summary
Ana Onse Mpata Umodzi (AOMU) translates into ‘all children same chance’. We are a non-governmental organization registered in Malawi. We aim to contribute towards support provision, stakeholder engagement, capacity building, and research in order to strengthen available educational support for children with SEND in Malawi.
Why are we doing this?
“The United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) highlights education as a key social and cultural right that plays a crucial role in reducing poverty and child labor, among other socio-economic benefits.”
Educational access and subsequent access in education are widely recognized as the gateway to change in many aspects of life for individuals with disabilities. However according to UNESCO, ‘disability is one of the least visible but most potent factors in educational marginalization.
Earlier research done in several African countries found that due to competing budgetary demands, the education and related needs of Children with Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) lack prominence in resource allocation and planning. This has a knock-on effect on what trickles down to ensure that children with SEND access the support they require
AOMU’s interest is to collaborate with other key players to ensure that children with SEND in Malawi are not left behind.
Our Purpose
the reason why we exist
To ensure that more children with disabilities are enrolled in school; more children with invisible disabilities are assessed and receiving appropriate educational support; more parents with children with SEND supported with information and skills to maximize their child’s potential; and communities that are more enlightened about the issues that affect children with SEND, including how they can be supported and better integrated into society.
AOMU Vision Statement
To see children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) in Malawi thrive and achieve their full potential in all aspects of life.
AOMU Mission Statement
To achieve access to quality education and support for children with SEND in Malawi through facilitating and supporting the provision of services and an enabling environment by institutions, service providers, communities, and peers.
