service provision & support
We provide customized support to address the varied needs of children with SEND
Supporting Access to Places of Learning
We purchased wheelchairs for three children who were struggling to access school due to their physical impairments. This initiative was fully funded by ordinary people living in the UK, who responded to our crowdfunding appeal.
The two girls had missed most of the first term due to mobility issues, and the boy was also having difficulties. See the pictures below from the wheelchair handover event.
CEO from the depart of education attended the event
The event was attended by the Chief Education Officer from the Department of Inclusive Education in the Ministry of Education. Also in attendance was the District Desk Officer for Special Educational Needs and the Zone’s Primary Education Advisor (PEA). Of course we also had the 4 village headmen from the children’s communities.
The above event led to more children, parents and teacher coming forward seeking support. In response, we purchased four more chairs for the following four boys. Look under the personal experiences tab to access their stories.

Supporting Conducive Learning Environments
The team visited a class in session for children with SEND. The children had much enthusiasm for learning but the learning space was not very conducive for 26 children with different needs and needing varied support. The school is appealing for support to build a bigger space, with a brighter and more stimulating environment. AOMU is supporting with this, but additional support is still required.
Building new blocks for school
With funds raised from the crowdfunding initiative, from ordinary people, AOMU has helped to get the project to build a new learning space/resource center for the 26 children.
This is how far the work has gone. More funding is required to complete it.
Supporting Access to Meaningful Education
Access to specialized education
(Situation 1)
We made a commitment to sponsor a girl who had dropped out of a special school due to financial difficullties. She was happy to return to a school where she could communicate and be understood using sign language.
Access to specialized education
(Situation 2)
AOMU is funding the provision of extra tuition (6 hours a week) for the rest of the academic year for 50 children with special educational needs and disabilities at Chambu School in Lilongwe district. The number of identified children is increasing, following recent training for teachers.
Learning together can be a very wonderful experience
Some group work during extra tuition sessions. Following the recent training, teachers are providing more personalized learning, along with supervised larger group interactions. AOMU organised the training and we are funding the afternoon sessions.
Can't learn on an empty stomach
Afternoon sessions can’t be easy on an empty stomach, so AOMU provides some snacks for these keen learners
